Vermiculite Boards and Fire Safety: Key Performance Evaluation

Vermiculite board is a panel primarily composed of expanded vermiculite, bonded with adhesives and other modifiers through compression molding. With its outstanding fire resistance, excellent physical properties, eco-friendly characteristics, and broad application prospects, it plays a vital role in fire safety. Vermiculite boards exhibit multiple critical properties for fire safety. Key performance evaluations include:

1. Fire Resistance:
High-Temperature Resistance: The primary raw material, expanded vermiculite, possesses excellent high-temperature characteristics. With a melting point between 1370°C and 1400°C, it can withstand temperatures up to 1200°C. In high-temperature environments, vermiculite boards maintain structural stability without deformation or melting, enabling long-term use in extreme heat settings such as kiln insulation and fireplace linings.
Fire Resistance Rating: According to the Expanded Vermiculite Fireproof Board Standard (JC/T 2341-2015), boards with a thickness of 25mm achieve a fire resistance rating of no less than 90 minutes. This means that during a fire, vermiculite boards can effectively block the spread of flames for a certain period, buying valuable time for personnel evacuation and firefighting efforts. They can serve as fire barriers, firewalls, and other fire-resistant materials in buildings.

2. Combustion Properties:
Non-combustibility: Vermiculite boards are non-combustible materials. As inorganic substances lacking carbon elements, they lack the conditions for combustion. Even under high temperatures or direct flame exposure, vermiculite boards will not burn, providing no fuel for fires and effectively preventing fire expansion.
No Harmful Gas Emissions: Free from formaldehyde, benzene compounds, and other toxic substances, vermiculite boards do not release harmful gases even at elevated temperatures, meeting green environmental standards. When heated to 1200°C (2164°F), they produce no smoke, toxins, or odors. This is critical for protecting lives during fires by minimizing exposure to harmful gases.

3. Thermal Insulation Properties:
Low Thermal Conductivity: Vermiculite boards possess low thermal conductivity, effectively blocking heat transfer. This means during a fire, vermiculite boards can slow heat transmission to the surrounding environment, reducing the severity of fire damage. Additionally, in daily use, the thermal insulation properties of vermiculite boards reduce heat loss within buildings, contributing to energy conservation.
Thermal Stability: Vermiculite boards exhibit excellent thermal stability, maintaining consistent performance without significant changes during temperature fluctuations. This ensures stable fire-resistant properties across varying temperature conditions, unaffected by thermal variations.

4. Structural Stability:
Strength: Manufactured through processes like compression molding, vermiculite boards possess adequate strength and toughness to withstand external forces. During fires, they maintain structural integrity without fracturing or collapsing, effectively serving as fire barriers.
Dimensional Stability: Vermiculite boards exhibit excellent dimensional stability. Over extended use, they do not undergo significant dimensional changes due to environmental factors like temperature or humidity. This ensures reliability during installation and operation, allowing the boards to adhere tightly to building surfaces and enhance fire protection effectiveness.

As building heights and volumes continue to increase, safety and fire protection become increasingly critical. Vermiculite boards demonstrate outstanding performance in fire resistance, combustion characteristics, thermal insulation, and structural stability, making them an excellent fireproof material with broad application prospects in construction, industry, and other fields. However, in practical applications, vermiculite boards must be correctly used and installed according to specific conditions while adhering to relevant fire safety regulations to ensure their fire-resistant properties are fully effective.
