Density and Thermal Conductivity of Insulating Vermiculite Boards

Thermal insulation vermiculite board is a new type of panel manufactured by hot or cold pressing expanded vermiculite powder with a specific amount of inorganic binder. It offers thermal insulation, heat resistance, and fireproofing properties. Its low thermal conductivity ensures excellent heat retention. Not only do vermiculite insulation boards possess high thermal insulation properties, but they also have an exceptionally high melting point. Even after prolonged exposure to high-temperature baking, they maintain their structural integrity. They can withstand fire exposure for up to 4 hours, achieving a high fire resistance rating. Their combustion performance meets Class A standards, and since they contain no asbestos, they are frequently used as fireproof and flame-retardant materials. The density of vermiculite insulation boards is closely related to their strength and thermal conductivity. The applications of vermiculite insulation boards are extensive. The density of vermiculite insulation boards determines their strength, typically ranging between 500-900 kg/m³. Lower density results in reduced strength but superior thermal insulation. Higher density enhances strength. Both factors must be balanced during production and application to ensure adequate strength while maintaining workability—allowing sawing, nailing, planing, and drilling—for easy installation and construction. The thermal conductivity of vermiculite boards ranges from 0.047 to 0.081 W/(m·K). Thermal conductivity is defined as the amount of heat transferred through a 1-square-meter area per second when a 1-degree temperature difference exists across the surfaces of a 1-meter-thick material under stable heat transfer conditions. This value is expressed in watts per meter-kelvin (W/(m·K)) or watts per meter-degree Celsius (W/(m·℃)). The thermal conductivity of vermiculite boards ranges from 0.047 to 0.081 W/(m·K). A lower coefficient indicates superior thermal insulation. Multiple factors influence the thermal conductivity of insulating vermiculite boards, including the quality of raw vermiculite and binders, as well as the manufacturing process. China has clear regulations: materials with thermal conductivity below 0.12 at temperatures under 350°C are classified as insulation materials, while those below 0.05 are designated as high-efficiency insulation materials. Therefore, vermiculite insulation boards represent a highly efficient insulation solution, and users can confidently rely on this high-performance material.
