Vermiculite bricks are insulating products with regular shapes, manufactured from expanded vermiculite mixed with a binder. They include cement-expanded vermiculite products, water glass-expanded vermiculite products, and asphalt-expanded vermiculite products.
The density of vermiculite bricks ranges from 0.4 to 0.8 g/cm³, with a thermal conductivity at room temperature of 293 to 502.4 J/(m·h·℃) (70 to 120 cal/(m·h·℃)). Compressive strength is <2.45 MPa, and water absorption is approximately 6%.
Typically, granular expanded vermiculite is mixed with an appropriate amount of high-strength binder, lightly pressed into shape, and then dried or baked to form the brick. The thermal conductivity of the binder is generally higher than that of expanded vermiculite. Therefore, while the addition of binder enables new applications for expanded vermiculite, it also reduces its thermal insulation effectiveness.
Vermiculite bricks feature a thin-walled hollow structure with low strength and melting point. Their refractoriness and high-temperature performance fall below other lightweight refractories, making them unsuitable for load-bearing applications or as medium-to-high-temperature insulation materials. Their service temperature range is 800–1100°C. Vermiculite bricks are widely used in roofing and soundproofing applications.
